The
Highway of Heroes
sign first appeared
on the Macdonald-Cartier Highway 401 in
2007. Canada
is the only country
in the world that
repatriates all
their fallen to the
same location
(Trenton Air Base)
then transport the
fallen to the
Toronto Coroner's
office. Since 2002
supporters of our
Canadian Troops have
been lining the
route along the
highway on
overpasses to fly a
flag and show their
support as a
procession of
vehicles passes by
with the fallen that
have been
repatriated to
Canada. Red Fridays
Foundation of Canada [RFFC] along with many other people and
organizations presented a petition in 2006-2007 to have the highway
401 name changed to the Highway of Heroes. With everyone's
help and determination this petition was successful with the
Province of Ontario. The symbol and decal We used to carry the Highway of heroes sign with the poppy flower. We were contacted by the Royal Canadian Legion's [RCL] legal staff notifying us of a pending law suit regarding a violation of their trademark of the flower. The facts are the RCL does in deed own the trademark of the Poppy Flower since 1945. Although they stated to RFFC that their responsibility given to them in 1945 by the federal government that the poppy remains to be used in Canada as a symbol of remembrance and not to be used in commercial use, our offer to give proceeds to the sales of the sign to their Poppy Fund was denied. After much negotiations the RCL made it very clear that no one can use the Poppy Flower without their permission in any for for any reason and we were denied any use the symbol. We had to comply by destroying our inventory or face legal actions. We could not destroy the inventory knowing the meaning of the sign so we shipped the remaining inventory we had to their legal offices at 100% loss to RFFC. The loss was significant. We have now registered the new Highway of Heroes symbol with the Maple Leaf. We are allowing anyone who wishes to reproduce our design for purposes of supporting our troops open access. Many communities, cities and provinces have asked us for use of the symbol for dedicating a street or highway in remembrance of our troops that have fallen. We can not offer use of the poppy flower as that is through the RCL. However, we are offering open use of our registered version using the Maple Leaf to any community or Province who whishes to use this symbol on their roads and highways to dedicate to our fallen. Our hope is that this symbol is seen across Canada adopting roads and highways in name of remembrance of our fallen recently and the past. Other organizations are also welcome to use our symbol for the purposes of supporting our troops by contacting us through our contact us web page. RIDE WITH
PRIDE.
